My Muppet Connection
My good friend and comedy writing mentor was Jack Burns. He was the head writer for the Muppets and so much more. I miss him. He helped shape me into a better writer. He also was George Carlin’s comedy partner. And I got to spend some quality time with him as well in Hawaii. He loved my performing name Roger Wilko because it means will comply.
- The first time I got paid to write I was 12
- The first time I got a check for writing comedy I was 18
- I felt guilty cashing the check (google it, this was the 80’s). Why? Because I had just gotten paid for the exact same thing that I used to get a detention for in high school.
- My first business was writing comedy for radio stations in 1984. The hook? I delivered them via email. Not many people really knew what that was back then.
